Karwa Chauth is an important celebration for every Indian woman! It holds a great significance and is believed to be a powerful grace from God for every couple. On this day every married woman keeps fast for the entire day and in the evening after the Moon appears in the sky, opens up her fast. This fast is basically kept for well being of husband and there are a number story related to the same that has taken place in the past.

Why Karwa Chauth is Celebarted?

Karwa Chauth 2023 is around the corner and before embarking on the journey to making this day bring life, happiness and joy in your brother's life, it's quite necessary to know why the day is celebrated. Here goes the story…

The story of Karwa Chauth is related to the Mahabharata that tells us that the story can be related to the savitri's devotion for her husband because of which she begged for the soul of her husband from Lord Yama who is believed to be the God of death.

Another related story is that of the time when Arjuna went to the Nilgiris for a few days to meditate and pray. He left behind his Draupadi and Pandavas, leaving behind and that made his wife anxious and that her to taking help from Lord Krishna for her husband's well being. On Krishna's advice, she kept fast for Arjuna's well being and the main stimulus for her being motivated to doing so was the story of Parvati who did a similar kind of struggle for Lord Shiva. As a result of the devotion of Draupadi, Arjuna returned soon and since then this festival of Karwa Chauth is celebrated all across in India.

This festival is also associated with the start of the Rabi crop cycle and the time when wheat is sown. And, this is the reason that the festival is celebrated mostly in the states which are agriculture dependent like that of Punjab, Rajasthan, and Western UP and alike.

Story behind the name Karva Chauth

This festival is celebrated on the fourth day as per the luni-solar calendar and that fact has given the name karwa Chauth. Karwa here means earthen pots and Chauth signifies the fourth day. Before the start of the festival women buy new earthen pots and will decorate it beautifully in different styles, wear make-up, bangles, new traditional clothes. And, after all that they visit each other's home to exchange Karwas.

How Karva Chauth is celebrated?

On this day, women lovingly with utmost zeal perform a number of other rituals, in addition to being on rigorous fast for the entire day. They perform Puja and prayers asking for long life for their husband. They will not even drink a glass of water for the entire day until the Puja after seeing Moon into the sky. After the Moon rises in the sky, women will see their husband's faces looking through a sieve. Religious teachings show cases that Moon acts as a representative of Shiva on this day.

About Sargi

On this day, the mother-in-law prepares a thali for her daughter-in-law. This thali is called sargi and this is the meal for the one who keeps fast that she will eat in the morning of the day of Karwa Chauth. This thali will particularly consist of Mithai, dry fruits, sweets, gifts and coconuts.
